Discover Morocco with Travel Gurus: Melissa’s Unforgettable FAM Journey

Our Travel Gurus team member Melissa Tolmie recently returned from an incredible Familiarization (FAM) trip across Morocco with G Adventures, and we couldn’t wait to share her highlights. From the bustling medinas of Marrakech to the silent serenity of the Sahara, her journey paints a vivid picture of what clients can expect from this breathtaking destination.

✈️ Getting There & Getting Around

Melissa flew from Edmonton (YEG) to Montreal (YUL) with Air Canada, making the most of a long layover to explore the city. Her flight to Marrakech (RAK) with Air Transat was comfortable, with seat selection worth the small added cost. For short hops, she recommends Royal Air Maroc but notes that domestic terminals have limited amenities—grab snacks before going through security!

Tip: Pre-book airport transfers to avoid inflated cab prices and reduce stress.

🕌 Marrakech Highlights

Melissa began with a luxurious stay at the Movenpick Hotel. Though not all-inclusive, its prime location near restaurants and shopping made it a solid start. For clients wanting authentic local eats and entertainment:

  • Dip N Dip: Delicious, affordable breakfast and desserts.
  • Comptoir Darna: Dinner and a traditional Moroccan show with belly dancers and fire performances.

🗺️ G Adventures Morocco Highlights Tour

This 9-day guided adventure from Casablanca to Marrakech gave Melissa a deeper appreciation for Morocco’s diversity—from ocean coastlines to desert sands and mountain ranges.

📍 Casablanca

While Casablanca is more modern and industrial, arriving early allowed Melissa to visit the stunning Hassan II Mosque—a must-see architectural marvel open to non-Muslims via guided tours.

🏛️ Volubilis & Meknes

Rich in Roman and Imperial history, these cities impressed with their ancient ruins and majestic remnants of Sultan Moulay Ismail’s empire.

🧭 Fez

A true highlight! With over 9,000 alleyways in its 9th-century medina, Fez left Melissa in awe. It’s easy to get lost—literally—but the culture, history, and architecture make it a must-visit.

🐪 Merzouga & the Sahara

Staying right at the edge of the dunes, Melissa explored via 4x4 and also opted for a magical camel ride at sunset. The tranquility and grandeur of the Sahara made it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

🏞️ Ouarzazate & Aït Ben Haddou

Driving through the Dades Gorge and along the Road of 1,000 Kasbahs was breathtaking. Stops included:

  • Taourirt Kasbah – A maze of ancient charm.
  • Film Studios – Ouarzazate is Morocco’s Hollywood.
  • Aït Ben Haddou – An earthen fortress so cinematic it’s been featured in countless movies.

🏖️ Wrapping Up in Marrakech

The tour concluded back in Marrakech, followed by a relaxing all-inclusive stay at the Be Live Adults Only Resort. A perfect way to unwind—though Melissa emphasizes that Morocco is best experienced as a multi-city journey, not from a single resort.

💱 Currency & Travel Tips

  • Bring Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) or Euros—USD is not widely accepted.
  • Many shops and restaurants don’t take cards, especially in smaller towns.
  • For clients, a guided tour is highly recommended to truly uncover Morocco’s rich culture and landscapes.

🌟 Special Thanks to Abderrahmane

The trip’s heart and soul was Abderrahmane, G Adventures’ Chief Experience Officer. His passion, knowledge, and personal connections turned the journey into something deeply meaningful—especially visits to Nomad communities.
