The Manhattan, a classic cocktail invented during the late 19th century, has many origin stories. The most prevalent suggests it hails from The Manhattan Club and, according to legend, came to fruition when it was created for a party thrown by Winston Churchhill's mother. With the success of the party came the success of the cocktail, with many of the revelers later requesting the drink by the name of the club where it originated. While the story hasn’t been able to be verified (and Lady Churchhill may have actually been in England pregnant with Winston at the time) the cocktail continues to be found on menus throughout NYC.
