Variations of mango shaved ice, also known as snow ice, are popular throughout all of Asia, but in Taiwan, it might as well be the national dessert. Traditional Taiwanese shaved ice was topped with tapioca pearls or even sweet potato dumplings and drizzled with a brown sugar syrup and/or condensed milk. But around 2009, mango shaved ice became an overnight sensation in Taiwan. Snow ice is different from snow cones or Hawaiian shaved ice. Where as those variations are made from shaved frozen water and topped with flavored syrups, snow ice is made from ingredients (milk, flavorings, etc.) frozeninto an ice block that are then shaved down into a snow-like consistency and topped with delicious toppings.
